Safety

Safety is our compass. Prostar is committed to providing a safe work environment as an integral part of our operations. We promote a positive EH&S culture by creating an environment where everyone is involved in safety systems and processes and has a role to play in continuous improvement.

Taking Safety Home Initiative

To retain healthy and focused employees, Prostar recognizes the need to look after the home front. Prostar’s Taking Safety Home is a program that sends at home challenges to employees in the field, for example, creating an emergency contact list at home. Employees are encouraged to participate and are asked to send photos to our main office when an activity is complete. These challenges are showcased within Prostar’s monthly newsletters, and chosen employees win prizes that enhance the safety of their homes, such as first aid kits and fire extinguishers. To learn more, you can watch a video presentations of Cold Lake’s Rig manager Eric Greene and one of our employee’s son, Preston, explain the importance of our Taking Safety Home initiative.

ECOMPLIANCE SAFETY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

ECOMPLIANCE SAFETY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

ECompliance not only addresses safety issues, but also provides training courses, on-the-job training certification, and competency observation forms, along with all other company documentation. Our employees, contractors, and clients can easily view Prostar’s expectations and company safety initiatives, and are able to sign off on the required reading documents. If such documents are revised to implement new processes or changes, everyone is notified and asked to review the changes (everyone who reviews it is tracked in the system). Our clients and contractors are also able to view employee profiles regarding training and experience, reporting in real time, inspection results, management site visit summaries, the status of incident and non-incident action items, among other items we track, creating complete transparency between the client and Prostar’s Safety Management team.

We react immediately to all safety issues in the field rather than using paper reporting, which is seen through much of the industry.  Our online safety management system allows workers to submit safety reports online from the field, which include pictures, comments and recommended action items. Our Operations team then responds immediately to any issues, for example near misses, hazard identification or equipment damage.

PROSTAR’S COMPETENCY ASSURANCE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

PROSTAR’S COMPETENCY ASSURANCE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

Enform’s Competency Program assesses workers’ abilities and skills, though it is not developed for Prostar’s procedures and processes. As such, Prostar has implemented a Competency Assurance Management System to ensure proper assessment of our employee’s abilities to perform Prostar work procedures. Our competency assurance management system consists of these main parts:

  1. Ensuring proper on-the-job training.
  2. Supervising the worker until they gain adequate experience.
  3. Performing job observations to evaluate an employee’s skills and abilities.
  4. Documenting a worker’s ability to perform a task safely, without intervention from a supervisor or manager.

These competencies are documented on Competency Job Observation forms and uploaded to eCompliance where the client’s management and field teams would have full access.

MENTORSHIP PROGRAM

MENTORSHIP PROGRAM

Prostar understands that mentorship goes far beyond training green hands and can include experienced workers training for the next position, new tools or equipment at a worksite, inadequate work standards or procedures and even employees switching to a new crew.

Prostar has created a Mentorship Program with incentives for those with sound mentorship qualities. Each quarter, outstanding Prostar Mentors are acknowledged with a certificate and receive a cash reward. Through this program we are seeing great mentors and leadership development from the field level.

VIDEO PROCEDURES

VIDEO PROCEDURES

Though companies allocated a great amount of time and money to hard copy documentation, studies have shown that such literature does not accurately communicate all that is required from the work force. Prostar has challenged the norm for such documentation, and is providing our teams with video procedures. These videos show and tell by simply elaborating how to complete specific tasks, amendments to procedures, and important safety tips. Videos are shown in the team environment and supervisors are able to conduct open-ended question sessions after the showing. Take a look at our safety meeting procedure video at https://vimeo.com/130152145 for an example of the process.

PRE-MOC PROCESS

PRE-MOC PROCESS

Prostar has streamlined the process of change control forms, a process that used to require training and enforcement. Prostar employees now submit a Pre-Approval MOC to Operations. These forms are very simple: What needs to be changed? What is your suggestion for change? As an added benefit, most changes come from the field to management.

ONLINE MSDS/SDS DATABASE

ONLINE MSDS/SDS DATABASE

Crews in the field have tablets, each with an app with access to all the MSDS / SDS for all chemicals used onsite. These documents are automatically updated when a new MSDS/SDS is made available by the manufacturer.

FLUID SAFE

FLUID SAFE

Fluid Safe is an additive product for hydraulic fluid. When applied, the fluid glows under black lights (supplied on the rig), which illuminate spills, leaks, or incidences that must be cleaned up. Sources of leaks can also be discovered and repaired. If a hydraulic injection injury was to occur, it would be detectable under the skin and would greatly reduce the amount of surgery necessary for the employee.

INET GAS MONITORING SYSTEM

INET GAS MONITORING SYSTEM

Each employee is supplied a four-head gas monitor that connects to Prostar’s databases when docked. Management can see if employees’ monitors have been bumped, calibrated, exposed to gas or failed. Replacement monitors are sent to location as soon as a monitor is experiencing issues. All monitor over-exposures send an alert which is then investigated.
